Crowds gather in Sydney for CeBIT 2010

THE country's biggest gathering of its tech tribes got under way today as CeBIT Australia opened its doors with exhibitor numbers up on last year and an expansion deal with the NSW government.

The show runs from today through Wednesday at Sydney’s Darling Harbour and this year there are 605 exhibitors, up on last year’s number of 576, according to Jackie Taranto, managing director of show organiser Hannover Fairs Australia.

Ms Taranto is hoping for visitor numbers in excess of 30,000 - there were 29,403 visitors last year.

The conference program has been beefed up with 135 speakers covering everything from e-health to the national broadband network to business transformation projects. Ms Taranto said there were 1400 paid conference delegates, up on about 1200 last year.

NSW Premier Kristina Keneally opened the show and attempted to establish her geek credentials with anecdotes about the difficulties of debugging programs tapped into her childhood Commodore 64.
