SYDNEY is losing millions of dollars in tourism spending as it continues its steep slide down the global rankings for international conferences.

City rankings recently released by the International Congress and Convention Association ranked Sydney 27th worldwide for the number of international conferences hosted in 2009, down from a ranking of 24th in 2008 and well below the top-20 position it held in 2006.

Kuala Lumpur and Rome outrank Sydney as a conference destination. And Melbourne is closing.

International business travellers injected $524 million into the NSW economy last year, around $57 million less than 2008 and $169 million less than in 2007, by spending an average of $1371 each on hotels, restaurants and tourist activities.
