Celebs Turn Heads at Royal Randwick

BLACK Caviar may be making headlines when it comes to racing, but off the track the ladies are worried about much more important things - like what they are wearing and who notices.

The Sydney Carnival at Royal Randwick is one of Australia's most celebrated events on the social calendar and the glamour kicked off on Saturday with celebs Jodi Gordon, Rachel Finch, Tom Williams and R&B; star Tinie Tempah all donning their best traditional black-and-white-themed race attire at the David Jones Australian Derby Day.

"I've noticed all the effort that the girls have gone to and they've tried so hard with the traditional black-and-white theme," Gordon told AAP on Saturday.

The event plays host to what is, arguably, Sydney's most glamorous Fashions on the Field competition and Gordon, former Home and Away beauty and Royal Randwick Carnival Ambassador herself, handpicked the day's best-dressed racegoers.

Gordon and fellow judges - Sea Patrol's Danielle Horvat, milliner Nerida Winter and designers Joe Farage, Gail Elliot and Joe Coffey - named North Bondi's Jane Wilkinson as the best-dressed female for her efforts boasting an impressive combination of a Saba skirt and Alannah Hill top, hat, gloves and belt.

Serial entrant Hal Salter from Melbourne, wearing a grey suit with black-and-white pin-stripe shirt and vintage black felt bowler hat took home the best-dressed male prize.

Gordon stressed the day is all about the fashion and not so much the gambling.

"Black Caviar who?' she asked, laughing.

"I'm definitely more about the fashion when it comes to the races.

"It's become more of a woman's day and it's our turn to dress up and enjoy with our friends and the boys can have a punt."

Gordon looked amazing, strutting through the crowd while punters sang the theme tune to Home and Away as she glided past in her black-and-white frock.

"Today I'm wearing Lisa Ho, I've worked with her to construct this, it's elegant and I'm wearing an akubra hat - carrying the Aussie tradition today," she said.

Gordon fulfilled her ambassadorial duties at the end of the day by clinking champagne glasses with some girlfriends in the DJ's tent, while she laughed about her first Royal Randwick experience - a sneaky day out with her older brother's friend just after she turned 18.
