The 2012 Sydney Festival Launches with a Bang

Sydney never ceases to amaze with its hearty cultural off-cuts, from million dollar main-stage wonders to sweaty basement standup routines.

But there’s one three-week stretch which incomparably brings all things obscure, local, iconic, up-and-coming and undiscovered in theatre, dance, pop-culture, art and music: our beloved Sydney Festival.

At the launch of the 2012 Sydney Festival at CarriageWorks last week, Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, Chair of Sydney Festival, said since 1977 the Sydney festival has sought to create “a welcoming and charismatic global meeting place, connecting Sydney to the world and attracting visitors and enriching our cultural and imaginative life.

“The City of Sydney is a proud partner with the NSW Government and the corporate sector in ensuring the festival can continue to inspire to provoke and to delight us all.”

And the extra $1.7 million in supplementary funding from the NSW Government announced earlier this year means the 2012 festival is set to be bigger than ever – with $500,000 of this set aside to incorporate more festival events in Western Sydney.

“We are determined that art should be part of promoting growth,’ said NSW Premier, Minister for Western Sydney and President of the Sydney Festival Barry O’Farrell.

“We know that art is about what’s in the soul, it’s about telling us who we are, telling us where we live and telling us where we’ve been.

“I encourage you to get out of the CBD and visit Parramatta to see what’s on offer there.”
