After years of flirting with the western suburbs, the Sydney Festival will go all the way with the launch of a vibrant new Parramatta program today.
Since 2003, the area has hosted occasional events - most notably, Indian composer A.R. Rahman performing to more than 60,000 people in 2010. This year, bolstered by funding from the state government and the Parramatta City Council, the west will be treated to the best of the festival across 10 days of music, theatre, film and art.
''Parramatta is an extraordinary community and a very culturally hungry and fast-growing one,'' the director of Sydney Festival, Lindy Hume, says. ''It's really about representing the realities of Sydney, which are that there's not one but two CBDs and there's a huge number of people that haven't been getting out to the Sydney CBD, so we wanted to bring the festival to them.''
