Second CBD Status is Selling Parramatta Short

WHAT’S in a name?

Everything, according to Parramatta State MP Geoff Lee, who wants Parramatta to be known as the capital of western Sydney rather than Sydney’s second CBD.

“Saying second denotes second best, as if we are inferior to Sydney, and it is not fair to compare us,” Mr Lee said.

“Far better to call us the capital of western Sydney and highlight all the wonderful things about Parramatta, with all the history we have here.

“It is great that people who live here don’t have to travel to Sydney for work or cultural events anymore.”

Mr Lee said the state government was committed to bringing more cultural events, such as the Sydney Festival, to Parramatta to reflect its status as the capital of western Sydney.

Lord Mayor Lorraine Wearne agrees with Mr Lee - up to a point.

“Yes, I agree that we should not be called Sydney’s second CBD because it implies we are second best, but I haven’t come up with an alternative,” Cr Wearne said. “I am not sure ‘capital of western Sydney’ is right, because that will alienate places like Liverpool and Penrith.

“Perhaps we should be called Parramatta, the centre, without mention of Sydney.”
