Motorists are advised to avoid the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the CBD this weekend while the bridge is closed for essential upgrading work.The bridge will be shut to motorists from 10pm Friday 13 January until 5am Monday, 16 January so work can start on waterproofing and resurfacing its deck.
“Up to 130,000 vehicles normally use the Sydney Harbour Bridge on a typical Saturday or Sunday in January so people need to find another way to travel around,” a spokesperson for the Transport Management Centre said.
The bus lane will stay open so vehicles that are allowed to use it will still be able to access during the closure, but there will be delays.
“Anyone heading into the CBD should catch a train or bus, especially to the Sydney Festival and events at the SCG, Sydney Football Stadium and Moore Park,” the spokesperson said.
“Extra trains will be operating around the clock on the North Shore and Northern lines and extra buses will be running from the North Shore, North West and Northern beaches.”
Other roads in the CBD will also be closed, including the Cahill Expressway over Circular Quay and the Western Distributor north of King Street.
“The Sydney Harbour Tunnel will remain open over the weekend, but extensive delays are expected from early Saturday and Sunday so motorists should also avoid it.”
Motorists who need to cross the harbour can take King Georges Road, Ryde Bridge and Lane Cove Road or Victoria Road, Gladesville Bridge and Centennial Avenue instead.
To help the traffic run as smoothly as possible, special event clearways will be put in place across the CBD as well as on many roads from Beverly Hills to Gordon and out to Mosman.
“Motorists should check the signs before parking as vehicles left in these zones will be towed away, and fines will be issued,” the spokesperson said.
