You made it through Christmas, you survived New Years and before the tinsel has had time to settle, Sydney is exploding with more parties, festivals and gigs than your poor, wrung out mind can handle. With the Sydney Festival kick starting this weekend and the city transforming into a wonderland of music, art and performance, it’s time to dust off your party hat and head out for round two. Friday at Beresford Upstairs get ready to shake off last years hangover as Melbourne band Undercolours take to the stage. Moving from explosive rock songs and emotive story telling far beyond their years, their music is showing a boldness to put songcraft before trend. Having recently supported The Naked And Famous and scoring a spot on the Parklife bill, Undercolours are quickly emerging as a new force in the Australian rock scene and this is your chance to see them free before their shows start selling out.
Sydney explodes this Saturday as the opening night of the annual Sydney Festival takes place in the CBD, transforming the city into a free open arena filled with music and live art. This year they have pulled out all the stops with local-grown ARIA Award winner Megan Washington taking to the stage ahead of music phenomenon Manu Chao La Ventura, playing his first Australian performance exclusively for the Sydney Festival. Keep the good times rolling over at British music Icon Norman Jay’s Good Times Sound System, the kitted-out red double decker bus and long-time feature of London’s Notting Hill Carnival, with Jay putting on an epic eight hour set of funk, soul and disco.
Also part of the Sydney Festival on Saturday and not to be missed, performance art gets tipped on its head, literally. As The World Tipped is an extraordinary piece of aerial theatre that tells the tale of ecological crisis, a rather apt topic with the end of the world due this year and all. At the Secretariat of the Copenhagen Climate Change conference, harassed staff fail to notice as the world around them, literally and metaphorically, slides toward disaster. Suspended above the audience in the night sky, the performers struggle to control their increasingly precarious world as they do battle with the effects of drastic environmental catastrophe.
Starting this Saturday and running until January 22 you can take a blanket down to Sydney Olympic Park and enjoy their free outdoor cinema series, Movies by the Boulevard, Showcasing a spectrum of genres which will culminate with Short Soup, a series of short films from a diverse range of cultures rarely seen in mainstream cinema. Take a picnic and your main squeeze and see if the old yawn and stretch an arm out for the grope” move works as well as it does in 80’s teen movies.
Finally, this weekend Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's Recorders is turning you into art. Often beautiful, often awkward and thoroughly thought-provoking, this is both a major show and one of the few times in which it’s okay to be checking yourself out. Recording you at various points through audio and video, visitors will be encouraged to leave traces of themselves throughout the show, whether it is images of the contents of their pockets, questions they have long wanted answered, the sound of their voice or even their heartbeat.
