Sydney Launches Wool Week

WOOL Week was launched this week in Sydney with a collision of country and city, wool growers and fashion designers, at a range of events across the city.

The Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) initiative will run until May 9 and is a part of the global Campaign for Wool; the patron of which is the Prince of Wales.

One of the highlights of Wool Week was the launch on Tuesday night of the Wool Modern exhibition at Walsh Bay, which celebrates wool in the 21st century.

The exhibition featured a range of designer garments alongside wool-focused installations from some of the best Australian fashion designers, including Collette Dinnigan, Willow, Romance Was Born, Josh Goot and Akira, as well as leading interior designers Sarah King, Emma Elizabeth and Henry Wilson.

Wool Modern curator, Charlotte Lurot, said she wanted the exhibition to reflect the versatile, environmentally-friendly nature of wool; while also trying to break negative perceptions of the fibre.

"Wool Modern is about creating a platform to communicate and showcase wool as a versatile, diverse and relevant fibre... and to crack through some of the traditional perceptions of wool as that kind of cosy fibre that's only for winter, woolly hats and overcoats," Ms Lurot said.

Ms Lurot wanted to show wool as being at the cutting-edge of fashion.

"The biggest names in fashion and design around the world are using the fibre in such innovative ways; they're pushing the boundaries," she said.

"The exhibition was about bringing together some of the foremost established and emerging creative talents in the world, to have them really showcase their expertise with wool.

"There is such a huge trend towards environmentally-friendly eco-fashion. Wool has always had those credentials... it is entirely sustainable, there is no cruelty involved in the production and it replenishes itself naturally."

The exhibition will travel to Shanghai later this year; before potentially going on display in Tokyo, New York and Paris in 2013.
