Sydney's Top Five Free Events June 29 - July 1

The 18th Biennale kicks off this week and Sydney’s set to get busier than Paris Hilton's DJ schedule (her hands-free DJing has really set the bar, ya know?). From ice-skating at the beach to free booze at the bar, there are free events taking place all over town. We’ve made it easy by picking out the top five for you to show your pretty face at.

Bondi Beach’s annual Winter Festival sees the iconic stretch of sand transformed into an ice rink just meters away from the ocean. In celebration of the festivities The Bucket List and Tonight are throwing a party this Friday to Break the Ice and everyone’s invited. With complimentary beer, wine and cider from 6:30 to 7:30pm, make sure you RSVP ASAP to get yourself on the guest list. Double points if you scam your way onto the ice rink and perform the ‘Iron Lotus’. 

Vice are coming back to FBi Social this Thursday for another night of booze, sweat and balls-out mayhem, and this time round they’re bringing along self-proclaimed ‘space-garage pirates’ Tiny Migrants. Having collaborated with the likes of Gospel legend Mark Sultan, Japanese jet rockers Guitar Wolf and Beasts of Bourbon’s Spencer P Jones, These chipper folks seem determined to kick a hole through your ear canal.

Love all things vintage? This Saturday Favourite Things, the Beach Road Hotel’s new weekend markets for all things vintage and handmade, will be setting up shop in the Gallery Bar. Showcasing up-and-coming designers, one-off vintage finds and a florist, these markets one-up any Westfield shopping spree with the additions of DJs and a bar. With gourmet food stalls selling fresh coffee, breakfast and lunch and acoustic performances throughout the day, you can skip the usual shame of being seen at the pub before lunchtime.

Fancy yourself the next Banksy? Saturday’s Creative Lane Art and Craft Festival at the Gaffa Gallery allows local artists to showcase their art works. A platform for local artists to interact with the community, they’re also holding free workshops organized by individual artists. Giving you the opportunity to meet the artists in person and get your hands dirty, they provide you with a space to try out your artistic talents without the cardio fitness necessary for running away from cops after spray-painting shop fronts.

We all know Sundays are reserved for sleeping off Saturday night’s regrets, but try to resist the urge to hide away under your blankets this weekend. The 18th Biennale of Sydney is Australia’s largest contemporary visual arts event, showcasing innovative contemporary art from around the world. This Sunday take a trip down the rabbit hole and over to Cockatoo Island which has been transformed into an interactive art space, and is made for exploring new ideas from around the globe.
