Record July at Sydney Airport

A rise in domestic and international passengers has helped Sydney Airport notch up its busiest July on record.

Chief executive Kerrie Mather said domestic passengers rose 2.6 per cent to 2.1 million in July compared to a year ago, while international travellers increased 3.6 per cent to 1.1 million.

The results made for the airport's best July on record, she said.

"The recent trend of significant growth in Singaporean and Malaysian nationals arriving in Sydney continued, with outstanding increases of 54 per cent and 45 per cent, respectively," Ms Mather said in a statement on Monday.

"There was also solid growth of 12 per cent in Chinese traffic during the month, with China set to become the airport's second largest foreign nationality group this year."

The rise in international travellers was driven by airlines Scoot, AirAsia X and Emirates carrying more passengers between Australia, Asia and the Middle East.

Increased capacity by the major domestic airlines, including discount carriers Tiger and Jetstar, also helped boost local passenger numbers.
