Spring Into Action With the City of Sydney

Spring is officially here and it’s time to get outdoors to see and do all that Sydney has to offer this month.

September is an exciting month with a lot going on and offers something for everyone.

Art & About Sydney kicks off on 18 September, with the festival now expanded to include a year-round program of events and activities, as well as favourites like the Australian Life and Little Sydney Lives photographic competitions.

A free, live music lounge will transform the rooftop of the Marconi Terrace at Sydney Town Hall. Known as The Terrace, the New York-style rooftop bar on the Druitt Street side of Town Hall, will feature live performances by a range of artists from Emma Pask and Jones Jnr to Microwave Jenny and Paul Capsis with the Café at the Gate of Salvation choir.

Locals and visitors can kick back at The Terrace, which features garden furniture, a bar and live music, each night from 5pm and 3–8pm on Sundays. There is even a day at The Terrace for kids with old school favourites, learn-to-dance workshops and art and craft activities. First in, best dressed.

Are you a child of the 70s and 80s? GAME ON, at aMBUSH Gallery in Central Park, Chippendale, could be for you. GAME ON will offer a world of vintage and nostalgic gaming in a space transformed with art.

Expect some of your favourite 80s arcade games, pinball machines, ping pong and foosball as well as outdoor gaming through the precinct. BYO vinyl to spin on the DJ decks, lounge with friends in the cinema room for some old school classics or go head to head in a ping-pong tournament.

The Sydney Fringe Festival runs until the end of the month, and with a range of events and experiences across Sydney it’s the largest independent arts festival in the state.

As part of the festival, Redfern Community Centre will be hosting the Redfern Groove music and culture event on Saturday 12 September, from 2-6pm.

Curated by singer-songwriter Leah Flanagan, the performers include Aboriginal-Tongan singer Radical Son (David Leha), singer-songwriter Marcus Corowa and grassroots reggae outfit, Green Hand Band.

Bring along a blanket and settle down with your friends and family for a fun day out that includes a jumping castle for the little ones and food trucks to cater to all.

The City of Sydney is a proud supporter of Queer Screen Festival, which runs from 22-29 September at Event Cinemas, Sydney.

The festival presents a broad range of films from across the world ranging from family comedy, crime thriller, self-discovery, life as a queer Muslim, biopics and shorts. Visit queerscreen.org.au for more information.
