Los Angeles Billboard Blitz by Sydney, NSW

Los Angeles is being bombarded with giant images of surfing at Bondi and the Sydney Harbour fireworks as part of a $3 million tourism campaign to cash in on the Oprah Winfrey visit.

In coming weeks, 10 huge electronic billboards will be installed across Los Angeles to promote tourism in NSW flashing 1300 images each day of some of the state's most famous scenes.

State tourism minister Jodi McKay said the LA campaign was aimed at trying to lure US visitors on the back of the Winfrey visit after the website had experienced an unprecedented 33% spike in visits in the days after the airing of the Oprah shows.

Qantas Vacations in the US also experienced a 250% increase in visits to its website, a 25% increase in phone calls and a 30-40% increase in quote requests.

The number of website visits that have translated into actual bookings is yet to be revealed.

The LA assault is one of a series of campaigns to be rolled out across the globe by the NSW government in the coming months. Tourism NSW has teamed up with airlines and tourism partners in Germany, India, the UK, China and Singapore over the next few months to promote the state. Three campaigns worth $530,000 will be rolled out in New Zealand, promoting short breaks in Sydney, Byron Bay and the bush.
