City of Sydney: We're Officially a World Leader in Throwing Parties

The City of Sydney executive manager of culture, Rachel Healy said that per capita the city has more festivals than the world's other major metropolises.

"During the Olympics, the mayor of London hosted a world cities forum, which was the culmination of research conducted from 12 cities around the world to map the cultural activity of each one," Ms Healy said.

"Of those 12 cities, Sydney has per capita the highest number of festivals."

The City of Sydney backs eight annual festivals.

Ms Healy said demand from locals and visitors for more public events led the city to keep expanding the number.

"People want to be out and about with other people, to hear for themselves and to live in the moment and see people in the flesh and I think that is a wonderful part of Sydney's psyche," Ms Healy said

"Even in winter, the Vivid Sydney festival and celebration of light is an amazing way to get people to interact with their surrounding and their city. They all rug up and still make it out for the event."

Ms Healy said that making full use of all of Sydney's surroundings has been the key to the continued success of the festivals.

"There are still hidden places we are discovering and sensible festival directors are working to find ways how people can experience these venues and take in these wonderful locations and that is why our festivals are so successful," she said.

There are also a number of community festivals that occur throughout the year in the CBD and surrounding areas.
